The travel guide stated that back then:
MONONGAHELA (754 alt., 8,675 pop.) is at the mouth of Pigeon Creek. This city is an important river point and manufacturing center. Early named Parkinson's Ferry and later Monongahela City, its charter was granted in 1873. The name "Monongahela" is a form of the Indian Menaun-gehilla, meaning 'river with the sliding banks.' Chief products are machinery, chemicals, and fire bricks.
--- Pennsylvania: A Guide to the Keystone State, 1940

The population today is roughly 4,200 people. The river continues to be actively used for bulk transportation, along with a railroad running along the banks. Construction and health care are now the top employers.
