Gardner, MA is a furniture manufacturing center and the self-proclaimed "Chair City of the World". In 1976, this big chair was donated to the City of Gardner by the Gardner Rotary Club to celebrate the bicentennial. The chair is made of mahogany, from Honduras, by Leon LaPlante of Winchendon, MA. When it was first installed in front of the Helen Mae Sauter School at 130 Elm Street, the 20.5' high, 3000 pound chair was listed in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest chair in the world. In 2011 the chair was restored by the Maki Company.

The top of the ladder back chair is inscribed GARDNER MASS. On the rung below is written THE CHAIR CITY
