The official name of this statue is actually the sea, but most know it as Big Mathille. You can be hard not to look when entering Oostende. The naked, curvaceous lady is resting on the water between the green of the Leopold Park. It is a creation of sculptor Georges Grard 1954. He showed in his works repeatedly prove that he had a fondness for plump women. The round shapes of Mathilde symbolize the lushness and sensuality of the sea.
A few years ago there was a discussion about the location of the statue. Monuments and Landscapes service wanted Thick Mathille for the renovated Kursaal place again. However, the city council did not like that and decided that the monument in its current location - in the middle of the Boulevard Leopold II - had to stand.
