When US-66 was first routed in 1926, it passed through Santa Fe Plaza. In 1937, Highway 66 was re-routed and bypassed Santa Fe altogether. The new alignment, saved approx. 80 miles of driving distance, between Santa Rosa and Albuquerque.

"The Santa Fe Plaza is a National Historic Landmark in downtown Santa Fe. The Plaza mirrors traditional Spanish-American colonial cities. The plaza, or "city-square", was originally, and is still to this day, the central gathering place in town.

The Plaza, Santa Fe’s “Central Park,” was the end of the Old Santa Fe Trail (1822-1879). It is lined with huge shade trees and benches. Many of the buildings surrounding the Plaza stand just as they did during colonial Spanish times.
