"This pioneer cemetery was the Protestant burial ground for those who died during the 19th century boom of the Mt. Diablo Coal Mining District. It is located midway between the Nortonville and Somersville townsites. Many of those buried here died in mining accidents or were victims of diphtheria, scarlet fever, or smallpox epidemics. Vandalism had almost destroyed the cemetery by the time the East Bay Regional Park District assumed responsibility for the property in 1974."
