The siege of Petersburg lasted for many months and casualties were high on both sides. Some 30,000 Confederates were re-interred here at Blandford Cemetery after being removed from their original battlefield graves. Some were indenified and placed in marked graves organized by state, others are buried as "unknowns."
This stone arch replaces an earlier arch installed in 1884. Above the arch it reads:
OUR CONFEDERATE HEROES
The inscription at the base reads:
“THERE COMES A VOICE THAT
AWAKES MY SOUL,
IT IS THE VOICE OF YEARS
THAT ARE GONE;
THEY ROLL BEFORE ME WITH
ALL THEIR DEEDS.”LADIES MEMORIAL ASSOCIATION
