The majority of the buildings in the district are located on Colebrook Road and contains 63 contributing buildings principally built before 1880. Other the coming of cars, the town remains very much like it was in the mid 19th century.
While agricultural in nature, Colebrook centered on raising cattle for the production of leather. There were several tanneries in the area, because of the availability of charcoal and the raw materials for bark mills. The land in Colebrook was not generally suitable for planting crops.
