Colm Toibin's novel, "The Master" is a fictional account of the life of novelist Henry James. In real life, James met a sculptor named Hendrick Anderson while both were visiting Rome. Anderson was 30 years younger than James. It is not known whether James and Anderson were ever lovers...but there is much evidence that that may have been the case. In the middle of Chapter 10, after James buys one of Anderson's sculptures, and as James plans to return to London, the pair walk to the Spanish Steps which is close to Anderson's hotel. There, they say goodbye and plan to meet again at some point in London.
