Jan Melsens was born in Kortrijk in 1922. Belgian paratroopers SAS (Special Air Service) conducted in this area surveillance and combat missions under Operation "Caliban".
With a bold, successful attack on the enemy, the sergeant was killed. In general, he is called the liberator of Meeuwen.
