It is the 12th annual Midsomer St Michael Literary Festival. The festival was the brain child of the late Conrad Maplin. Maplin has many followers locally, in particular a local hippy lecturer, Tim Settingfield. There is a prize for the best novelist at the Festival and Tim Settingfield, Neville Williams, Richard Rackham, and Grace Maplin are judges.

Richard Rackham is found dead at the bottom of the stairs at his home. His neck had been broken before death, indicating a martial arts connection, and his laptop was missing. Rackham was gay, and attention focuses on his lover, Neville Williams. Williams, however, is murdered shortly afterwards. Williams works for book publisher Sam Callaghan. Callaghan was Rackham’s publisher, but Rackham had been threatening to take his new book elsewhere.

Rackham’s greatest signing is the successful author, Jezebel Tripp. Ms Tripp is larger than life and arrives at the festival. Scott sees her emerging from bushes near the gate house and finds the laptop nearby. Before he can question Ms Tripp she is found stabbed to death.

Another man under suspicion is John Denton. He is to be nominated for the Maplin prize for his latest novel. He is also ex SAS. The Maplin prize involves a large cash donation. Grace Maplin, it turns out, is nearly broke and is hoping to do a deal with Sam Callaghan. Callaghan is unaware of this and had been intending getting money out of Grace Maplin.

In the end Barnaby finds out that another local author, Camilla Crofton, was in the SOE during the war, and has also had martial arts training. She intends to make an announcement at the festival and does. She states that she has been writing as Jezebel Tripp for the last several years. The dead people had been trying to kill her to stop her making the announcement. They had not known that she could defend herself and were killed in the process.
