Built during the War of Restoration, the Forte do Cão aimed to strengthen the defense of the Portuguese coast facing the threat of the Spanish Armada, particularly along the border of Minho. The strength of this type has obvious structural similarities with the fortifications implanted between Vila Praia de Ancora and Esposende, whose planimetry was in that time a breakthrough in the defense system and watch.
Possibly these fortresses were outlined by the same engineer, as part of a constructive plan of new fortifications that would enhance the line of fire of the fortresses that already exist. In neighboring Viana da Foz do Lima, there are two fortresses, the Areosa fort and the Montedor fort, which have the same general design as the Forte do Cao.
