"The Women's Club of St.Francisville planted a number of Chinese Chestnut trees in the spring of 1967. Reason being of a blight that had wiped these trees out of existence. This was one of their annual civic projects. This prompted the organization of the first Chestnut Festival in 1976.
"At the West end of Main Street you are able to visit the "Oldest Log Home" in St.Francisville. This building houses the Women's club and there you will find a country and craft store. This is available for parties, etc for a fee. The restoration of the oldest home was opened in October 1984." ~ Lawrence County, Illinois
Text of marker out front:
This cabin was originally constructed by Jules Grandclair (A Frenchman), 1855 - 1932 presumably in 1876 on 11th street.
Mr. Grandclair was the father of Barbara (Grandclair) Cunningham & Lucy (Grandclair) Garvey of this village
It was donated to the Woman's Club of St. Francisville by a grandson, Steve Cunningham, & reconstructed, on this site during the summers of 1984-5. The cabin was enlarged with the use of another cabin dating the same period.
