This state border crossing at "Hughes Gap" is primarily known as an access point for the Applachian Trail which follows the TN/NC border. North bound on the trail is towards the Roan Mountains, south bound heads to the Little Rock Knob overlook.
The gap is between the Roan and Iron Mountains in the Appalachian Mountain Range - allowing passage between two rural counties.
