First Congregational Church of Portland (1890) is located at 1126 SW Park Avenue. Architect Henry J. Hefty (Switzerland). Venetian (Italian) Gothic style. The basaltic rock building with its dramatic 175-foot, cream-and-red-latticed bell tower was dedicated in 1895. The church is noted for its massive stone arches. Originally, two shorter and rounder towers lent balance to the single, off-center tower that remains. Because renovations were too costly, they were removed in the 1940's leaving the building lop-sided. The church provides opportunities for worship, education, pastoral care and social activities. It is frequently used for community performances, lectures and civic activities.Instructions for logging waymark: A photograph is required that shows you (or your GPS receiver, if you are waymarking solo) and the place.
