The Church, the First Methodist Episcopal Church was founded in 1789 and had several locations until this one was chosen and was built in the 1920's.
The church has had three fires since construction. They occurred in 1960, 1995, and 2004. The one in 1995 was the most destructive to the point that services had to be observed in another section of the church for 20 months until the restoration was completed,
