Due to its unique location in the geographical crossroads of Louisiana, the Arboretum is at once home to all the varied types of forestation in the state. It has existed since 1961.
The Visitor's Center is situated in the heart of the Arboretum, inside the larger confines of Chicot State Park, and has audio/visual displays inside, as well as a classroom with an alligator tank, other exhibits and restrooms. The displays teach about the different types of forests native to Louisiana, and gives information about the kind of animals and flowers which can be found in each type of woodland areas. American Bald Eagles are known to nest in the park.
The Arboretum is accessible 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., excluding Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
