The NRHP documentation describes this 2-for-1 listing:
The two-story commercial Green and Faris Buildings were constructed separately, but are deemed sufficiently similary with a common current owner that one application was submitted.
Ed J.L. Green bought property at 140-144 E. San Antonio in 1878, and in the next year built the rock structure. His private enterprise, "Ed J.L. Green Banker," received a national charter six years later. On May 16, 1885, the First National Bank of San Marcos opened with 500 shares of capital stock at $100 a share, of which Green held 300. (Note: This capitalization could be considered worth up to $72M as economic power relative to the total output at the time.)
The Faris Building at 136-138 E. San Antonio was subsequent built between 1881-85. It has housed several business over the years including Chinese grocery store.
Update: The buildings remain in good condition in their current use for legal firms and a credit outfit with parking available in front on the street.
