Local blacksmithing artist Michael Kinghorn created a distinct sculpture for Fire Station 46, located at 34 Iber Road in the Stittsville area of Ottawa, entitled Overhaul 2012.
This sculpture engages with the word “overhaul” in two ways. A term frequently used by firefighters, overhaul refers to the stripping of walls and floors in order to search for trapped heat. Similarly, the layers of this sculpture gradually dissolve to reveal different textures and metals.
Overhauling can also refer to an act of restoration, specifically in Kinghorn’s overhauling of materials to create the structure. Reflecting the sustainable design of the building, the majority of the materials were repurposed from discarded firefighting equipment, including stainless steel drawers from an old fire truck.

Overhaul, outside the station at 34 Iber Rd., is an obelisk in found metal, peeled back layer by layer to expose its interior, its heart. The outer, shiny layer is built of wide, shallow drawers that were once part of a fire truck. The middle, darker layer is made from the same water-tank metal Kinghorn used on Collapse, and bought at a junkyard near station 46. The central part of Overhaul is a mottled aluminum colour, and Kinghorn made it by melting down dozens of firehose connectors.
