The point of the exercise is fine beer, and the Flying Saucer does it well, with a good number of beers on tap (with regular rotators on cask), and plenty in the bottle. There is a small selection of wines if beer isn't your thing. Seating is at the bar or at one of the tables or booths, with a few comfy chairs and couches. There is a good-sized covered patio where they'll open the windows if the weather is right. There is no smoking permitted.
Sundays are $3 Texas brewery pint nights, Mondays are $3 pints for most everything on draft that isn't high octane, and they also have a UFO club members-only brew available. Wednesdays are brewery nights, where you purchase that night's beer in a glass provided by the brewery, and sometimes, the brewery's representative will be on hand. Thursdays feature the tapping of some kind of tasty rare beer.
The food menu has been changed and then tweaked in recent days. Gone are most of the wraps and the limited choices in pizza and wings, as you can now select your own toppings on your pizza, pick from a variety of sauces for your wings -- I hear they use ghost peppers in the Atomic ones -- and there are plenty of pub grub sandwiches and salads. Beer and food menus are always online at their website.
You will see a large number of personalized plates along the wall and ceiling. This is your payoff for joining the UFO club, in which you pay for a shirt and a card that you run through their computer every time you visit any FS location. You can log up to three beers a day, and once you hit 200, they'll have a party for you and put your name on a plate on the wall/ceiling. Depending on how many times you go through the Ring of Honor, you may get a bigger party (in terms of $$$) or a prize like a shirt, a stein, or even a trip to GABF (at ten times through). You'll also get rewards at 50, 100, and 150 beers, something of a carrot to keep you moving along.
There are semi-regular beer tastings, where the representative from a given brewery comes in and pairs their beers with a variety of foods, and there are also festivals for beer tasting (visit a themed beer tent, get your card punched), Oktoberfest, and anything else on the minds of the folks at corporate.
They are not "child-unfriendly," but this is a bar, not a restaurant, so there are no booster seats or high chairs. Note that, after 9 PM, the age limit is 21 and over only.
