The 487th Bombardment Group (Heavy) was formed in
September 1943 and moved to RAF Lavenham on 5th
April 1944 as part of the Eight Air Force. The group flew B-24s and B-17s and
began combat in May 1944. Their role was the strategic bombing of military
assets in Normandy, in preparation for the invasion. During the invasion the
group targeted coastal defences, roads, bridges and railways. In July 1944 they
attacked German troops in support of British forces near Caen, in August they
struck gun emplacements to support Allies in Brest, and gave air cover to an
airborne attack on Holland in September.
The group attacked German industry, destroying factories,
refineries, railway yards and communication assets. They aided troops during
the Battle of the Bulge between December 1944 and January 1945, and continued
to assist the Allied advance in 1945. The group returned to the USA in
September 1945, and were disbanded in November 1945.
The memorial is in the form of a small bronze plaque
attached to a wall in the market place in Lavenham.
The inscription reads
