The former jail was built in 1888 at the same time the adjacent courthouse was built. The jail was designed by architect Joseph W. Yost, who was also the architect for the courthouse. The jail is constructed of smooth sandstone. At the front of the jail is the brick former sheriffs residence which was built in 1890. The county moved its jail facility to a modern facility and used the jail space for other purposes.
