The Nations long Civil War ended on April 9, 1865, when General Robert E. Lee Surrendered his forces to General U. S. Grant in Wilmer McLean's Parlor in the village of Appomattox's Courthouse. The text of the marker reads:
APPOMATTOX
"At the McLean house at Appomattox, two miles north, took place the meeting between Lee and Grant to arrange terms for the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. This was at 1:30 P.M. on Sunday, April 9, 1865."
