Text from information placard:

A Golden Era

This pair of granite buhrstones, call raccoon buhrs, are believed to have been quarried in Vinton County along Raccoon Creek. Regardless of their origin, these stones represent a once flourishing rural industry. Water-powered mills served many years as a place where grists were ground, people gathered and news was shared. In 1840 there were more than 50,000 water-powered mills in operation in the United States. By 1900, railroad construction and steam power eventually doomed the small local mills. The rocks still stand as relics of former days.
