La présence des carmélites à Niort remonte à l’époque de Louis XIV au 17e siècle. Les premières religieuses venant principalement de Paris, arrivèrent en 1648 et elles s’installèrent dans l’ancien hôtel de Barbezières situé en limite de la ville. Le premier monastère a été construit en 1675 dans le jardin de l’hôtel par Le Duc dit Toscane, un architecte renommé en Poitou pour ses réalisations au profit des congrégations religieuses. La communauté des Carmélites a vécu dans ce premier monastère jusqu’à la Révolution. En octobre 1792, les religieuses ont été chassées de leur monastère et elles se sont dispersées par petits groupes dans la ville. Après des années de clandestinité, la communauté s’est dispersée en 1808.

Cinquante ans plus tard, en 1858, six religieuses provenant du Carmel de Poitiers sont revenues à Niort pour s’installer dans la maison de jardinier du Clos-Martin, un vaste terrain situé sur les hauteurs dominant la ville. Dès l’année suivante, Sœur Emmanuel de Sainte Sophie, la jeune prieure de l’époque qui assura cette responsabilité pendant 40 ans, décida et surveilla la construction du nouveau monastère de la rue de Strasbourg avec le soutien de Monseigneur Gay, évêque auxiliaire du diocèse. Les plans furent réalisés par M. Segretain, l’architecte du département connu pour ses nombreuses réalisations sur Niort. Les travaux durèrent une vingtaine d’années. L’église du monastère fut inaugurée par Mgr Pie, évêque de Poitiers en novembre 1868, mais la réalisation de la dernière aile du cloître, n’a été entreprise qu’en 1879. En 1901, la communauté s’exila à Thumaide en Belgique pendant 18 ans en raison des mesures prises contre les congrégations. En 1919, elle retrouva son monastère de la rue de Strasbourg. En 1933, deux sœurs partirent en Chine pour aider les carmels de Chung-King et de Kumming. En 1940, pendant l’exode de la guerre, les carmélites de Niort accueillirent une communauté provenant de Corioule en Belgique. Et en 1955, la communauté accueillit pour deux ans les 16 carmélites d’Hanoï, qui partirent ensuite fonder le carmel de Dolbeau au Canada.

En raison des difficultés d’entretien du deuxième monastère, les carmélites de Niort décidèrent en 2006 de faire construire un troisième monastère mieux adapté aux besoins actuels de la communauté. Une décision courageuse inspirée par une confiance dans l’avenir, qui conditionne le renouveau de la communauté.
