This building was built for the 1904 St. Louis Worlds Fair, originally with 400 rooms. Following the Fair, the hotel, in the heart of the downtown entertainment district, was a favorite of the social set as limousines deposited theatre-goers there for after-performance dinners and gatherings.
More than 100 conventions convened at the Jefferson Arms yearly after the Fair. Among the famous guests who stayed there were Mary Pickford, Arthur Rubinstein, Harry S Truman, John L. Lewis, Robert A. Taft and Enrico Caruso. The hotel was the site of the 1916 Democratic national convention and was the headquarters hotel for the American Legion’s first national convention in 1935. An addition was added in 1928 bringing the room count to 910. In 1950 the hotel was sold to the Hilton Corporation, however after five years anti-trust laws brought the sale of the hotel to the Sheraton Corporation and it was re-named the Sheraton-Jefferson. In more recent years the building has been the Jefferson Arms Apartments, mostly for senior citizens. The building's condition deteriorated in recent years, with the Gold Room, which served as a premier banquet venue for 50 years and closed 1969 when the building became apartments.
(Note: On July 14, 2006, the building was bought for $19 million and will undergo a $75 million renovation including restoring some of the lost element in the last 15 years. The building will remain primary an apartment building for senior citizens but also have a new theater added. It is also planned to reopen the Gold Room as a banquet facility)
