The oldest cemetery within the Mt. Pleasant Historic District is the Seceder Cemetery that adjoined an 1810 church building just southeast of the Caruthers Addition. Robert and Mary Caruthers are among the original pioneers buried here, in a family plot surrounded by an ornamental iron fence. A number of the ornate sandstone tombstones here are the workmanship of S. J. Miller, a local mason of the 1830s.
- Historic District Nomination
The cemetery dates to the founding of the community in 1803. It was founded by the Sededers, a religious group which separated from the Presbyterians in Scotland. The cemetery with some 300 graves is now maintained by the Seceder Cemetery Company. The cemetery continues as an active cemetery however burials are infrequent.
