Matthew Bell (1820-1883), a builder and sculptor from Lancashire, used the relatively soft Guelph limestone to carve decorative features on many Guelph buildings from the 1850s to the 1870s. Matthew Bell is recognized for a number of richly ornamented stone houses in Guelph including 40 Albert Street, 49 Albert Street, and 96-98 Water Street.
Matthew Bell died in 1883 as a result of injuries sustained in a fall while working on the Church of Our Lady Immaculate (
