This marble obelisk on two stair-steps honors the Oregon Trail pioneers who settled this county.
The words carved into the obelisk read as follows:
"PIONEER MONUMENT
Erected on the site
of the
OLD OREGON TRAIL
In memory of the pioneers
Who blazed the way
Built by
NATRONA COUNTY PIONEER
ASSOCIATION
1849 1911"
A second historical plaque was subsequently added to the obelisk marking the site of Fort Casper, to the west:

US Military Post

Situated one mile west
Of this spot
Marked by the State of Wyoming
1914"
