This station is a U.S. Geological Survey standard bench mark disk, located in Pawling, NY. It is set in a rock ledge outcrop near the north edge of Old Rt. 55 Road, about 0.2 mi east from the junction of the road with NY Rt. 55:
THE STATION IS LOCATED IN PAWLING, NY. IT IS 0.2 MI EAST ON OLD RT. 55 ROAD, FROM A JUNCTION WITH NY RT. 55, SET IN A ROCK OUTCROP 15-FT NORTHEAST FROM THE EDGE OF THE ROAD, ABOUT 2.5-FT ABOVE ROAD LEVEL, APPROX 60-FT SOUTHEAST FROM A YELLOW ROAD SIGN, AND APPROX 75-FT NNE FROM POWER POLE NYSEG 183/1367 NYT 321A/40, A STANDARD DISK, STAMPED -971 1942-, AND SET HORIZONTALLY.
The disk was recovered in poor condition. It was struck with a drift or other such device several times, distorting the disk and obscuring the stamping, apparently in an effort to insure the stability of the setting. The numbers '97' of 971 (the elevation designation) are barely perceptible amongst the strike impressions, and the year '1942' are visible. Hence my present title. When documentation can be obtained by me from the USGS revealing additional information regarding this mark, it will be posted here.
The number 971 appears on the USGS topographic map. The disk is easy to locate, as it is clearly visible from the roadway.
