Berger, Augustin. Czech dancer, choreographer, and ballet master. He danced at the opera houses in Dresden and Prague, and was a soloist at the Stavovské Theatre (1876-80). In 1883 he became a soloist at the Prague National Theatre. He eventually became ballet master of the Prague National Theatre (1912-23), where he helped to develop the national Czech ballet, and the court opera in Dresden (1900-10). He was artistic director of the Warsaw Ballet (1910-12), and staged Carmen at the Alhambra Theatre in London. He was ballet master of the Metropolitan Opera Ballet in New York (1926-32). He also choreographed the first non-Russian production of the second act of Swan Lake in 1888, an event attended by Tchaikovsky himself during a trip to Prague.
