3. The WASHOE COUNTY COURTHOUSE, corner S. Virginia and Court Sts., is the place where many famous divorces have been granted. It is of light gray limestone with a shallow portico and central dome. Details are classical but suggest French Renaissance influence. Murals by Robert Caples are on the walls of both floors. Other murals are by Hans Mayer Kassel. Two divisions of the District Court sit here, and handle criminal and civil cases as well as divorces. It is told that some divorcees, elated by their freedom, pause on leaving the courthouse to kiss a front piller, or even walk to the Truckee to hurl their wedding rings into the river; bu boys who recover the rings declare they are of the dime-store variety, and accuse the throwers of fradulent (sic) practices.
This courthouse still stands today and is still in use. There is also a nice writeup on this courthouse from the NPS.gov website here.
