Marker Text:
Congregation of German, Swiss, and French settlers was formed about 1729. Log church here, Lancaster's first, 1736. Stone building, 1753; brick church, 1854. Rev. Philip Otterbein, Rev. William Hendel, Dr. Henry Harbaugh were eminent pastors.
The First Reformed Church was founded around 1729. They bought a hickory grove and built their first church of logs. (1736)
By 1750 they had out grown their log church. The building was sold, moved across the street, and used as a house till it burned. The church was rebuilt with stone.
In 1852 they demolished the stone church, using the stone as the foundation for the new brick church.
This seem apropicate! Building the new chuch on it's old foundation!
