This is one of four named World Heritage Castles built by King Edward I in North Wales as part of his attempts to subdue the Welsh people.

This castle was designed by King Edward I's master architect, Master James of St George. Although it was never finished, it is an excellent example of a concentrically designed castle. A large part of the fortifications survive, as does the moat.
