L’Université de Sherbrooke, IBM, Teledyne Dalsa ainsi que les gouvernements du Québec et du Canada ont inauguré mardi, à Bromont, le Centre de collaboration MiQro Innovation en microélectronique (C2MI), un projet de près de 220 M$.
Le projet avait été annoncé pour la première fois il y a trois ans, en septembre 2009. Industrie Canada s’engageait alors à y verser 82,95 M$. Du côté provincial, le ministère du Développement économique, de l’Innovation et de l’Exportation garantissait 94,9 M$. La part des partenaires privés, dont IBM Bromont et Teledyne Dalsa, est de 40,6 M$.
IBM a aussi indiqué mardi qu’elle prêtera 190 employés au C2MI et qu’elle y dépenserait 100 M$ sur cinq ans pour le maintien des frais d’exploitation. L’entreprise a fourni environ 11 M$ d’équipements et le terrain de 40 acres sur lequel a été bâti le centre.
C2MI, dont la propriétaire est l'Université de Sherbrooke, aura pour mission d’aider les entreprises dans le développement et la commercialisation de produits électroniques de prochaine génération.
Son PDG, Normand Bourbonnais, veut entre autres en faire un guichet unique pour les PME qui souhaitent créer des produits électroniques. « Quelqu'un peut nous aider avec une idée et on va l'aider sur tous les plans. On va l'aider à monter son plan d'affaires, à trouver des investisseurs, le mettre en relation avec des entreprises qui vont faire le design, la fabrication ou l'assemblage de ses composantes électroniques, etc. »
Dans ses laboratoires extrêmement sophistiqués, le C2MI encouragera surtout la recherche liée à la commercialisation, plutôt que la recherche fondamentale.
« C'est une chose de créer une nouvelle puce révolutionnaire, donne en exemple John Lutz, président d'IBM Canada. C'en est une autre d'arriver à la fabriquer en quantité et à bon coût. »
Les entreprises intéressées pourront par exemple louer à l'heure les équipements parfois uniques du CDMI.
La recherche fondamentale, celle qui mène par exemple au premier exemplaire d'un nouveau prototype, continuera surtout d'être confiée aux universités, a indiqué M. Bourbonnais.
Présent pour cette inauguration, le premier ministre du Québec, Jean Charest, s'est réjoui de cette collaboration entre l'Université de Sherbrooke et des entreprises privées.
« Il s'est dit beaucoup de choses au sujet du financement des universités au cours des derniers mois. L'une des choses que nous ont demandées les représentants des étudiants, c'est de ne pas faire ce que nous annonçons présentement, soit de financer la recherche. » Pour le premier ministre, il s'agit d'un élément crucial.
Le ministre fédéral de l'Industrie, Christian Paradis, a pour sa part rappelé que l'investissement de près de 83 M$ du gouvernement fédéral dans ce projet en faisait le plus important jamais fait dans le cadre du Programme d'infrastructure du savoir (PIDS). Un total de 520 projets ont été subventionnés par ce programme, dont 280 au Québec.
