Marie-Henri Beyle (23 January 1783 – 23 March 1842), better known by his pen name Stendhal, was a 19th-century French writer. Known for his acute analysis of his characters' psychology, he is considered one of the earliest and foremost practitioners of realism, as is evident in the novels Le Rouge et le Noir (The Red and the Black, 1830) and La Chartreuse de Parme (The Charterhouse of Parma, 1839). A plaque commemorates the birth here of Stendhal. It reads:
A LA MEMOIRE D'HENRI BEYLE (STENDHAL)
Né dans cette maison le 23 janvier 1783
Décédé à Paris le 23 mars 1842
A second plaque reads:
Stendhal's Birthplace
Stendhal (Henri Beyle) was born on January 23, 1783 in this apartment, located on the 2nd floor in the rue des Vieux Jésuites. The apartment belonged to his father Chérubin Beyle, a lawyer. His mother Henriette Gagnon died here in 1790. Stendhal experienced here the happiness of childhood, the sorrow of mourning and the pains of an overly strict education.
The street has been renamed Rue Jean-Jacques Rousseau to commemorate a brief visit by the Genevan philosopher and writer in 1768.
