Vyrustal v kontaktu s anarchistickým hnutím v severních Cechách. Strední školu studoval v Praze, ale v sedmnácti letech byl vyloucen ze všech stredních škol Rakouska-Uherska za svuj protest proti poprave španelského anarchistického teoretika Francesca Ferrera. Anarchismus privedl Mareše k zájmu o sociální problémy, kterým se v období první republiky venoval jako autor próz a divadelních her a jako novinár v casopisech Tribuna, Prager Mittag a Prager Tagblatt a také na svých studijních cestách v Evrope a v Africe. Vstoupil také do KSC a spolupracoval s Rudým právem. Mel prátele mezi ceskými i nemeckými spisovateli, znal se napríklad s Jaroslavem Haškem, Karlem Capkem, Ferdinandem Peroutkou, Maxem Brodem, Franzem Kafkou i Egonem Ervínem Kischem.

He grew up in contact with the anarchist movement in Northern Bohemia. High school he studied in Prague, but at seventeen he was expelled from high school all the Austro-Hungarian Empire for his protest against the execution of the Spanish anarchist theorist Francisco Ferrer Guardia. Anarchism Mares brought to focus on social problems in the period of the First Republic as a dedicated writer of prose and plays as a journalist in magazines Tribuna, Mittag and Prager Prager Tagblatt and also on their study tours in Europe and in Africa. He joined the Communist Party and also worked with the Red law. He had friends among Czech and German writers, he knew, for example, with Jaroslav Hašek, Karel Capek, Ferdinand Peroutka, Max Brod, Franz Kafka and Egon Erwin Kisch.
