This is one we never expected to find. We know they can be scarce south of the border.
One may ask any Spokane resident from three to ninety three for directions to Riverfront Park and be assured that they will be forthcoming. But ask them the location of the
Lilac City Curling Club and the results may be somewhat different. You see, the Lilac City Curling Club is a club which operates out of The Ice Palace in Riverfront Park. It operates for 7 weeks every winter in November and December. They meet every Sunday for 7 weeks at the Ice Palace at 6:00 PM and play 2 draws on four sheets. The club is limited to 16 teams every winter. Annual membership costs $150 and centenarians need not apply, as age is limited to 16 Years to 99 Years.
Still in use and open slightly over 4 months of the year, this is a regulation sized arena that has hosted thousands and thousands of skaters in its 40 year life time. Besides public skating and private skating parties it offers drop in hockey games for ages 16+, skating lessons and, due to the lack of curling rinks in the area, curling lessons and curling leagues. Though it is outdoor, possibly because it is covered it has been recognized as one of the best outdoor skating rinks in the nation. Marked for both hockey and curling, there are four borderless sheets (no high-hard ones) that appear to be a bit shorter than regulation size. We weren't there after 6 PM on a Sunday, so it was a skating rink when we visited.
