1895: The first game of what will become known as rugby league football is played in England, starting the 1895–96 Northern Rugby Football Union season.

1915: Charlie Chaplin's film The Tramp released.
1925: F. Scott Fitzgerald publishes The Great Gatsby.
1935: The great dust storm in the United States hits eastern New Mexico and Colorado, and western Oklahoma the hardest. It will be made famous by Woody Guthrie in his "dust bowl ballads".
1945: Atomic bombing of Hiroshima: A United States B-29 Superfortress, the Enola Gay, drops an atomic bomb, codenamed "Little Boy", on Hiroshima, Japan, at 8:15 a.m. (local time).
1955: First edition of the Guinness Book of Records is published, in London.
1965: Charlie Brown and the Peanuts Gang appear on the cover of Time.
1975: U.S. President Ford posthumously restores the U.S. citizenship of General Robert E. Lee, leader of the Confederate States of America during the American Civil War.

1997: India's Missionaries of Charity chooses Sister Nirmala to succeed Mother Teresa as its leader.
