1889: Inspired by Jules Verne, pioneer woman journalist Nellie Bly (Elizabeth Cochrane) begins an attempt to beat travel around the world in less than 80 days (Bly finishes the journey in 72 days, 6 hours and 11 minutes).
1899: Felix Hoffmann patents aspirin and Bayer registers its name as a trademark.
1909: The city of Tel Aviv (at this time known as Ahuzat Bayit) is founded.
1919: Grand Canyon National Park: An act of the United States Congress establishes most of the Grand Canyon as a United States National Park.
1929: Herbert Hoover is inaugurated as the 31st President of the United States, succeeding Calvin Coolidge.
1939: African-American singer Marian Anderson performs before 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., after having been denied the use both of Constitution Hall by the Daughters of the American Revolution, and of a public high school by the federally controlled District of Columbia.
1949: The Poe Toaster first appears at the grave of Edgar Allan Poe.
1959: Motown Records founded by Berry Gordy, Jr.
1969: The last issue of The Saturday Evening Post hits magazine stands.
