Jacksonville Cemetery, a contributing site within the Jacksonville National Historic District, is a pioneer cemetery dating to circa 1860. The cemetery is divided into several sections, one of which is the Masonic Section. Several years ago, the local Rotary placed a number of markers describing the history of each section. The text of the marker reads:

MASONIC SECTION In 1861, Warren Lodge No. 10 of the Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons purchased a section of land for $1 for burial of its members and their relatives. Some of Jacksonville's very prominent residents lie here. You will find woodworker and coffin maker, David Linn (1826-1912), who built most of the city's wooden buildings, including the historic Presbyterian Church.    Banker Cornelius C. Beekman (1828-1915), is credited with starting the first bank in southern Oregon. Judge U.S. Hayden (1810-1879), Beekman's confidential clerk and family friend, also rests in the Beekman enclosure. Beekman's banking partner, Thomas Givings Reames (1839-1900), once Sheriff of Jackson County, lies nearby.    Remembered most often for setting aside the original cemetery acreage, Colonel James Napper Tandy Miller (1826-1900), fought in the Indian wars, planted vineyards, and was active in state pol- itics. John S. Love (1830-1867), who helped lay out the newly established town, was also instrumen- tal in the formation of the Jacksonville Cemetery. On October 23, 1859, his mother, Margaret, was the first person buried on its grounds--by special permission she was interred before the cemetery officially opened.
