Take a tour & let us know what you liked in the area.
Depicted in the Gallery are a few of the sights:
The 1st Somerton Fire Station at 1700 Byberry Rd. Phila. PA 19116 was built at the entrance to the Victorian era Philly County Fairgrounds in 1800s. The building is still in use as a city office. The new E.58 station is at Hendrix St. & Bustleton Ave.
Remains of the foundations of the fair racetrack can be found in the park 1,000' behind the old firehouse at N40 06.839 / W075 00.655 BUT the entrance to overgrown & undeveloped park is quite hard to find. NOTE it is trespassing to enter via RR or Byberry Rd. It is a long bushwhack. We suggest no one go there. (The entrance was near Sewell and Welton Sts.)
A view of the Somerton War Monument and the 1960s Overhill home development across the valley & up hill. The near background homes are on old Bustleton Rd. (Turnpike) The war monument is near the Waymark Coordinates .
The Somerton Masonic Hall originally the Watson Comly School is a historic building on Trevose Rd. SE of Bustleton Ave. also near the Waymark Coordinates.
"Built in 1892-1893, it is a two-story, brownstone building in the Colonial Revival-style. It features a one-story stone entrance pavilion, and large hipped roof with stone chimney. The building served as a school from its completion until 1928, the site was traded to the Masons for land for the larger school. It was used from 1930 for many years as a lodge hall."
