In 2013, Texas Monthly magazine named Lockhart Smokehouse one of the Top 50 barbecue joints in Texas. They are a rarity in the DFW area in that one orders by the pound and takes it away on butcher paper, just like they do in Lockhart and Luling.

Lockhart Smokehouse is in Oak Cliff, near the Bishop Arts District, at 400 W Davis, Dallas, TX. Phone is 214-944-5521, and they're open daily at 11 AM, closing when they run out of food. They are kin to the Kreuz Market in Lockhart, and serve up their sausage.
While there are plenty of good local joints, they usually do "Pick 1/2/3" plates. Here, you're going to go to the back where the meat counter is. Pick out your food by the pound, or fraction thereof, and if you're nice, they'll probably offer you a small sample of something if you're curious but not committed. Offerings are brisket, shoulder ("lean brisket"), chicken, sausage (regular or hot), pork ribs, and pork chops. On Wednesdays, get in early for the beef ribs, and on Thursdays, same deal: Get in early for the burnt ends. Prices and the menu are available on their website. As everything is by the pound, there's no "pig out meal" or a budget meal. Buy as much as you like, and if you're cheap, get a side of cole slaw for $2.
They also offer sides here, with the classic beans, potato salad, and cole slaw joined by deviled eggs (different meat inside each day) and mac and cheese (and a habañero variant that is incredible). Soft drinks are available, either in a bottle or from the fountain, and they have a bar, too. Be sure to try one of the local brews from Dallas's up-and-coming craft brew scene.
There are plenty of signs around about no sauce and no utensils. Unlike Kreuz, who really do mean that, you'll find sauce if you look around, and of course, utensils are available if you get sides (and they hide the utensils by the sauce, near the bar, so you'll find them both in the same place). The natives and us converts will tell you, though, that you shouldn't need sauce, as the food speaks for itself; your mileage may vary.
Parking is out on the street or in a small lot behind the restaurant. They're kid-friendly, OK for groups, and they accept cash and credit cards.
