The Modoc County Record is Alturas' only newspaper, publishing every Thursday. The sign in front of their establishment mentions them being in business since 1892. In addition, local residents also receive the Herald and News newspaper from Klamath Falls, OR.

The Record has a pretty decent website and contains a digital archive of their newspaper going back to 1997.

As one local put it when I visited Alturas recently, "The Record is the one highlight that everyone looks forward to reading, mainly for who got married, who died and who got arrested." This statement should give you an idea of the close-knit community that Alturas encompasses.
