A sign beside the round describes its history:
This round of Sitka Spruce was cut in 1987 from a tree felled in 1979 near the Carmanah Valley. This tree's life began in 1501, resulting in 478 growth rings.
The Sitka Spruce is located predominantly along the coast of British Columbia. Sitka Spruce average 70 metres in height and can reach up to 93 metres. The bark is thin, scaly and is brown or purplish grey in colour. The needles are blue-green in colour and are stiff and sharp. The wood is soft and light and is used for general construction, shipbuilding, plywood, musical instruments and airplane construction.
