This is one of four sculputres by Daniel Chester French on the steps of the former U.S. Custom House which is now the National Museum of the American Indian.

The former U.S. Custom House, now a Museum, Court and Archives, was constructed 1902–1907. The Beaux-Arts style building is chockfullofscultures, reliefs and murals. Four large sculptures on the frnsteps represent the four continents of Asia, Europe, America and Africa. This one represents Aisa. The artist is Daniel Chester French.
The Smithsonian Inventory (

"A woman, seated with eyes closed. She has a Buddha on her lap and a cross behind her right shoulder. At her right sits a tiger and on her left side are three figures. Under her feet are three skulls...
