In 1843, Francis Pettygrove won a two out of three coin toss with Asa Lovejoy and thus had the right to name the city after his hometown of Portland, Maine. If Asa Lovejoy had won, he would have named the city after his hometown of Boston, Massachusetts. The same coin that Pettygrove and Lovejoy used was flipped to determine which of the two neighboring parks would be named Lovejoy and which would be named Pettygrove.

The striking feature in Pettygrove Park is Manuel Izquierdo’s design of a reclining woman, “The Dreamer.” Izquierdo said that “’The Dreamer’ speaks of hope, of beauty and serenity, of love, and for a better life in our midst.” He filled the bronze sculpture with foam so that falling rain would make a gentle sound like a kettledrum rather than the ringing it would make if hollow.
