Iris Murdoch's The Bell centers around lay people who form a small society around an Abbey north of London. One of the main characters, Dora Greenfield, has been staying at the Abbey with her husband who is working on a manuscript there. One day, after another quarrel with her husband, she takes the train to London, visits briefly with her lover when her husband calls...and gets silence when Dora picks up the receiver. Dora decides to leave..and goes to the National Gallery where she encounters a painting by Gainsborough. "It occurred to her that here was something real and something perfect."
