A great place for lots of slow motion train watching is the east end of the BNSF classification yard at Bakersfield.

With Amtrak passing by regularly on the mainline next to the fence, long-haul freights departing on the yard lead, and constant switching action in and out of this end of the classification yard, there is always train movement, although at a slow pace, to watch here.
