This Basswood is the “largest known tree of its species in the United States of America.” So says the marker naming it a National Champion Tree. It also states: “White Basswood. This stately tree is noted for the fuzzy (pubescent) silver underside of its leaves. The name ‘Basswood’ comes from ‘bast-wood’ which is the useful inner bark used for making rope and mats. The flowers can be made into a tea and linden oil, syrup may be made from the sap, and the light wood is good for building crates and boxes.”
Its official name is Tilia Heterophylla - Malvaceae and is commonly found in the southern and central United States. It is just a stone’s throw from the American Science Obelisk at the Tower Grove House.
