The Shrine of SS Peter and Paul was built in 1848, with the cornerstone laying on June 4, 1848. The church was built to serve the growing German Catholic population in Cumberland at the time. The church was founded by Redemptorist Bishop John Neumann in 1848, he later became the first American male saint.

The brick church is in Gothic Revival style with a steeple with a cross at its top.

After the Redemptorist left the church was operated by the Carmelite Friars until 1875 when the Capuchin Franciscan Friars arrived and they have served SS Peter and Paul Church since then. The parish church was changed to a Shrine in 2011 when several of the parish churches in and around Cumberland were combined to form the Our Lady of the Mountains parish.

The Shrine conducts Mass everyday except Sunday and is open for prayer and adoration Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Saturday 8:00-12:00 p.m.
